About Me

There are so many things I could share with you; truth is, I am actually fairly private when it comes to me and my family. I play my cards fairly close to my chest, you could say. But once I get comfortable, watch out, you might end up finding out too much! I will say that I have a wonderful husband and best friend that I’ve been together with for 16 years and we have three beautiful healthy kids, one girl and two boys.

My love for photography started at an early age and growing up without a lot of family photographs fueled my desire to document life through the lens. Over ten years ago, I picked up my first mechanical, fully manual, film SLR camera and decided that it was time to see what I could do with it. It started with a love of photographing objects, architecture and architectural details as well as landscape and people. I was obsessed with processing black and white film and prints so much that I spent many, many hours in the darkroom with smelly chemicals. Watching those pictures come to life before my eyes was so gratifying and rewarding.

Even though the way in which we capture images have changed over the years and will continue to change, a picture is still a picture and that will never become obsolete.

Having children made me approach my photography with a different perspective and gave me even more reason to take photographs, which to me, are priceless treasures that we can continue to pass on to our loved ones for years and years.

My photographic style is unfussy and natural – I try to let families just be themselves, in that moment in time. I love when children are laughing and being silly. I truly enjoy meeting new people and engaging with children and babies – gosh, don’t get me started about how much I adore babies. I love the innocence and curiosity I see in the faces of the children I meet and love how they are so easily delighted by the simple things in life that we might take for granted.

So If I were to let you in on a few other tidbits about myself, this would be what I could tell you:

1.    I have an ever-growing collection of film cameras, especially ones of the plastic variety.
2.    Our life is hectic and crazy at times but that’s just how it is and I have learned to adapt and I like it that way.
3.    I am in love and mildly obsessed with design from the mid century, especially pieces by Eames.
4.    I got bit by the travel bug later in life and now I dream about it and travel whenever opportunity arises.
5.    I became a runner shortly after getting married and between family, work and everything else, I love to run. My goal is to run at least three half marathons this year again, maybe five!

I am an on location, natural light photographer in Winnipeg, Manitoba (Canada).

Feel free to get in touch with me. I would love to photograph you.

- May

Some parting thoughts:

When I say I want to photograph someone, what it really means is that I’d like to know them. Anyone I know I photograph.
