About Me

There are so many things I could share with you; truth is, I am fairly private when it comes to me and my family. I play my cards fairly close to my chest, you could say. I will say that I have a wonderful husband who is also my best friend whom I’ve been together with for over 20 years and together we have three beautiful healthy kids, one girl and two boys.

My love for photography started at an early age and growing up without a lot of family photographs fueled my desire to document life through the lens. Learning to shoot began back in the days of film. I loved of photographing objects, architecture and architectural details as well as landscape and people. I was obsessed with processing black and white film and printing so much that I spent many, many hours in the darkroom with smelly chemicals. Watching those pictures come to life before my eyes was so gratifying and rewarding, and it taught me so much about light and processing.

Having children made me approach my photography with a different perspective and gave me even more reason to take photographs – because I don’t ever want to look back with regret that I never had those photos or somehow ever forget those moments. And also so that we can continue to pass these memories on to our loved ones for years and years.

My photographic style is to try to capture your life and those connections between you and your loved ones and all the special moments in between. I really love trying to get to know my clients when we’re together. I try to let families just be themselves. I love when parents and their children are laughing, being silly and enjoying each other – those are always my favourite images. I love the innocence and curiosity I see in the faces of the children I meet and love how they are so easily delighted by the simple things in life that we might take for granted.

So If I were to let you in on some things about myself, this would be what I could tell you:

  • I have an ever-growing collection of film cameras, working and non-working, and also ones of the plastic variety.
  • Our life is hectic and crazy at times but that’s just how it is and I have learned to adapt and I like it that way. I think I’m pretty organized and there is a method to the madness.
  • I am in love and mildly obsessed with design from the mid-century, especially pieces by Eames.
  • I got bit by the travel bug after my husband and I started traveling and now I dream about it and travel whenever the opportunity arises.
  • Another passion of mine is running. I became a runner shortly after getting married and between family, work and everything else, I love to run and have been running for over 12 years. I try to run around three half marathons each year and hope to run a full marathon when I have more time to train. If I could spend all my spare time traveling, shooting and running, I think that would be pretty perfect.
  • I love the outdoors. Even in the winter, I run outdoors.

Feel free to get in touch with me.

– May

Some parting thoughts:

When I say I want to photograph someone, what it really means is that I’d like to know them. Anyone I know I photograph.
– Annie Leibovitz

You don’t take a photograph, you make it. – Ansel Adams
